We believe that the world needs storytellers.
People of all different orientations, identities and backgrounds who are willing to engage in the sacred art of creation. We believe storytelling, at its best, is a spiritual practice that calls us to love the great questions of life without needing answers.
Penny Lou Cottage was created for authors, composers and illustrative storytellers who need a space to further the story they want to tell. We have welcomed novelists, poets, memoirists, playwrights, filmmakers and others into our cosy cottage located in a quiet, forested neighbourhood on Bowen Island, BC.
Creators are welcome to live and work in the house for stays of one week up to one month. Potential users must submit an application. Applications are reviewed four times a year (March, June, September and December) by the Penny Lou Cottage Committee. Attention is paid to approve a balance of emerging and established creators as well as creators of different backgrounds and identities.
Penny Lou Cottage falls under the umbrella of the Rivendell Society, a registered charity, which provides logistical and operational support. The Rivendell Community is a welcoming and radically inclusive Christian community. It is not expected that people using Penny Lou Cottage ascribe to any religious tradition or belief system. Information on Rivendell can be found at www.rivendellretreat.org.
